The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre

Alder Hey Children's Hospital: Institute in the Park

The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre

title

Designed by BDP, this new £128m facility in Liverpool will be the city’s first dedicated cancer hospital. Sharing the same health campus as the new Royal Liverpool Broadgreen University Hospital once complete, it will benefit from FM, clinical, surgical and critical care connections. The 11-storey building incorporates six radiotherapy Linac treatment suites at lower ground level, with soft space to add two more. The centre will also provide specialist chemotherapy and other drug therapies and services. A feature of the building is the set-back cantilever form over the entrance, and the sunken landscape court, which creates a covered winter garden. The building also steps back at its upper levels, creating external terrace space for wards and offering panoramic views across Liverpool.

Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, by BDP, reflects the specifications of the children who helped steer the design – in particular, the desire to maintain contact with nature while in hospital. Featuring green roofs and gardens, the park wraps itself over and around the building. Completed in summer 2018, the ‘Institute in the Park’, by Hopkins Architects, is built on the site of the old hospital, next to the Children’s Hospital. This new research and education building houses a mix of spaces – including research and teaching labs, offices, meeting rooms, lecture theatres, and breakout spaces. Finished the same year, the Alder Centre, designed by Alford Hall Monaghan Morris, provides bereavement counselling for families who have had a child pass away, and a national telephone helpline.
